We get it. Everyone gets busy, and it can be easy to let things slip off your radar. But showing your appreciation for those around you shouldn’t be one of those things. Appreciation helps build strong relationships and add value to dynamics (both professional and personal). So here are a few simple tips for showing your appreciation every day, in little ways.
And we mean really listening. Which is not listening to respond or listening to argue, it’s listening to understand. If you’re talking with clients, practice attentive listening so you can better understand not only their needs, but them as individuals. This will later be illustrated when you recall a certain detail, celebrate a remembered moment, or gift a special item. When it comes to personal relationships, listening shows you care and that you’re there for them.
This can be pretty literal. Showing up (and showing up on time) is a great way to demonstrate to others how much you truly value them. Not following through on commitments can be a harsh blow to relationship building. And even something as seemingly small as showing up late can tell others that you don’t value their time as much as your own, and that you aren’t someone they can rely on. So don’t fall into that trap. Do your best to be punctual and keep commitments.
Birthdays, work anniversaries, special events and closing dates. All these moments are important to those that live them, so take note. And if you have a hard time remembering dates and events, keep a calendar. Nothing says I appreciate you, and I care about you quite as much as making it about them.
